Drought Stress alters Solute Allocation in Broadleaf
نویسنده
چکیده
According to climate models, drier summers must be expected more frequently in 5 Central Europe during the next decades which may influence plant performance and 6 competition in grassland. The overall source-sink relations in plants, especially allocation of 7 solutes to aboveand below-ground parts, may be affected by drought. To investigate solute 8 export from a given leaf of broadleaf dock, a solution containing Co and Zn was 9 introduced through a leaf flap. The export from this leaf was detected by analysing 10 radionuclide contents in various plant parts. Less label was allocated to new leaves and more 11 to roots under drought. The observed alterations of source-sink relations in broadleaf dock 12 were reversible during a subsequent short period of re-watering. These findings suggest an 13 increased resource allocation to roots under drought improving the functionality of the plants. 14

متن کاملSolute Transport via Xylem and Phloem in Two Wheat Genotypes Differing in Drought Susceptibility
More frequent and more severe extreme events (e.g. flooding, drought, heat waves) were predicted from climate models for the next decades. Impacts of such events are relevant for crop productivity. Effects on a whole-plant level are the focus of this study. The influence of an extended drought period on solute allocation via the phloem was compared in two Bulgarian wheat varieties differing in ...
متن کاملCowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) Metabolomics: Osmoprotection as a Physiological Strategy for Drought Stress Resistance and Improved Yield
Plants usually tolerate drought by producing organic solutes, which can either act as compatible osmolytes for maintaining turgor, or radical scavengers for protecting cellular functions. However, these two properties of organic solutes are often indistinguishable during stress progression. This study looked at individualizing properties of osmotic adjustment vs. osmoprotection in plants, using...
متن کاملDrought effect on plant biomass allocation: A meta‐analysis
Drought is one of the abiotic stresses controlling plant function and ecological stability. In the context of climate change, drought is predicted to occur more frequently in the future. Despite numerous attempts to clarify the overall effects of drought stress on the growth and physiological processes of plants, a comprehensive evaluation on the impacts of drought stress on biomass allocation,...
متن کاملBelowground Response to Drought in a Tropical Forest Soil. I. Changes in Microbial Functional Potential and Metabolism
Global climate models predict a future of increased severity of drought in many tropical forests. Soil microbes are central to the balance of these systems as sources or sinks of atmospheric carbon (C), yet how they respond metabolically to drought is not well-understood. We simulated drought in the typically aseasonal Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico, by intercepting precipitation fal...
